This holiday season, in lieu of sending corporate gifts, we have made a gift to The Ocean Cleanup on behalf of our clients. The Ocean Cleanup is developing and scaling technologies to rid the oceans of the millions of tons of plastic that accumulate each year. We chose this organization because it shares many of the same values as our team and the families with whom we work: Innovation, ingenuity and a desire to make our planet a better place for all who call it home.
According to research by the Ocean Cleanup, trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largestone being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is located between Hawaii and California and is geographically larger than France, Germany, and Spain combined. Floating plastics trapped in the patches will keep circulating until they break down into smaller and smaller pieces, becoming harder to clean up and increasingly easier to mistake for food by sea life. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies for decades or even centuries.
To solve it, we not only need to stop more plastic from flowing into the ocean, but also clean up what is already out there. The Ocean Cleanup is developing systems that can clean up the floating plastics caught swirling in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. To clean an area of this size, a strategic and energy-efficient solution is required. The Ocean Cleanup system uses artificial coastlines to concentrate the plastic. The system is comprised of a long U-shaped barrier that guides the plastic into a retention zone at its far end. The plastic is then brought aboard, and once all containers are full, the plastic is brought back to shore for recycling.
